visit to Mt. Sugarloaf lookout grid QF57sc, west of Newcastle - 21st May 2023

As part of a recent road trip, I did a visit to Mt. Sugarloaf lookout SF57sc, west of Newcastle, home of VK2RNC, to look for a spot for doing 23cm DXing, plus activate VK2RAG and VK2RTZ 23cm repeaters, neither of which I could keyup. I also wanted to know was this site useful for doing WIA VHF/UHF Field Day contests from. Basically, the public carpark at the top, only gives a small window to operate up towards Port Stephens and up the NSW coastline,  any other direction would be useless due to heavy forested trees.

I did a walk up to the lookout, this was a rocky outcrop at the top, quite suitable for VHF and above, operating portable DX, but be aware that lots of tourists walk up to the top lookout, so you can't just consume all the space up there with gear and antennas, but I guess approx 50 sq metres of flat rock at the top surrounded by metal railings, good to strap small temporary antennas to. There is a road to get to the commercial radio site (not NBN3 or ABN sites) leaving about a 50 step ascent to the top lookout,

Grid Square locator is QF57sc and height approx 436m ASL

covid lockdown update in NSW

since NSW been in lockdown since mid-June, I taken opportunity of having the 4wd in the garage and in pieces, doing lots of upgrade and modifications including, fixing  12v DC cabling for radios, doing measurements of DC cable feed losses to radio with load and without load, one thing I discovered was that I had added  two big 60amp  relays evenly feeding the radios in the car, these are switched via the Accessories switching 12v direct from battery feed, via  300amp distribution box  (which feeds battery to radios, spotlights and radiator cooling fans, essentially additional high current devices not handled by main fusebox) to the radios and split by the two relays to share the load between all the radios. Looking at volts at the battery and measuring  at the radio, I only seeing  a couple hundred mV losses end to end, at full TX power,  most of that loss is across the relay. The 4GA cable is doing its job. I did add two new brass battery terminal connectors to replace the crappy terminal connectors supplied by Isuzu.

Realistically, I could have fed all the radios via one relay, as I not expecting to run multiple radios at once, even though two radios are for VHF & HF APRS,  but they are short term bursts of Tx, anyway,  I played safe by having two 60amp relays in case  a relay failed, then I don't lose all communications, which is very important if travelling in the outback. Having overkill on the relays means not pitting contacts from on-off keying of relays  every time I go in the car.  The idea of the relays was ability to isolate radios from power,  i.e I don't want a radio to fail or have it keying up by itself when the car is parked, so if I not in the car, then all radios are isolated, same applies to all other electronics in the car, isolated when  switched off.

Also replaced some older antenna sockets, they manage to get moisture in the SO-239 bases, the gold centre pin plating gets tarnished, replaced them, now  distant repeaters are much better in signal strength.

Did some more under body coating with Tar based paint,  it 's to reduce the pitting of underbody frame and panels from driving on dirt roads, the paint inside the rear bumper looked like 20 years of sandblasting. I first cleaned it all up with high pressure water cleaner, repainted with satin black rust guard, then coated over with Tar paint. This should slow down the damage to underbody paintwork from driving on dirt roads. I also custom made some smaller mud flaps to go underneath, minimize rocks flying up and hitting things, particularly  to protect things like brake and fuel lines and wiring  near fuel tank.

Looking forward to lockdown ending one day, so I can take the 4wd out in the country. The guys in my local radio club itching to go away somewhere too. Hopefully, we can coincide a trip away with a radio contest.

VK2MB - MWRS John Moyle Field Day Contest March 2020

Here are photos from the Manly Warringah Radio Society blog for when they operated portable for the  John Moyle Field Day Contest  on 21st & 22nd March 2020, just as the Covid lockdown began.

They still had good fun and did some radio contesting.

They operated from the Polblue Campground, Barrington Tops, NSW,  QF58RB  since they working HF,

however there are some nearby high spots, clear and worthy of  VHF, UHF and SHF activity.

post mortem of WIA Winter VHF UHF SHF Field Day Contest 2019

I forgot to do a write up, or I started but never completed, anyway, I did actually enter the contest, I operated from QF46pu, others who were there or nearby (QF46qu) were VK2CU, VK2DAG, VK2ZIW, VK2ZRH and VK2JDS.
I operated 24hrs segment. Bands used were 6m, 2m, 70cm, 23cm, 9cm, 3cm,  24Ghz, 76Ghz, not sure if we did 122GHz in the contest itself,  but we did spend a fair bit of time experimenting with 122Ghz on that weekend across the 3.8km void between hilltops.  Also did  some 4WDing around the two farms and taste testing some red wines at night following the roast pork cooked in a wood stove.
Overall, it was more of a microwave tuneup get together, than a serious go at contesting.

post mortem for John Moyle Field Day Contest 2019

the plan was to go to Mt.Lambie to operate the contest from, however, the weather was a let down, as it rained  all the way from Sydney to Lithgow and onto Mt.Lambie. In fact the whole of Mt.Lambie was engulfed by low cloud, as were any hills around Lithgow area.  So a plan of action was required, checking the BOM radar it was showing it as raining in Bathurst, that meant the alternative plan of going to Mt.Panorama was out of the question.  We noted that no rain showing on the radar to the north, ie. up to Ilford, Rylestone area. Started driving towards Ilford, as we progressed the weather improved, by time reaching Ilford it was mostly sunny, the road was dry. Once at Ilford, turned onto the Sofala road and headed along looking for a high location suitable for VHF and above, particularly for microwave bands.

Found a high spot just a few kilometres north of Sofala, about 860 metres ASL, QF46ux, an all open hilltop, setup off the road, then noticed the wind was suddenly increasing, by time we were ready to make contest contacts, the wind became so strong it was knocking over equipment and trying to blow away out portable gazebo.  Meanwhile, over on another mountain to the south west, Dave VK2JDS and Matt VK2DAG were now getting wet from a  rain squall and had to pack up all their equipment.

This lead us to the decision of packing up and go look at other potential mountain tops for future contests and microwave field days. One spot was up on the Old Ilford Road, QF46vx, this road runs along a ridgeline, all well above 1,000 metres ASL,  better than the location we stopped at on the Sofala Rd. We will keep this location in mind for future events.  Another potential area was at Wattle Flat QF46uu. we travelled back to Bathurst, then headed east, detouring up through sunny Corner and Dark Corner looking for potential high locations.  A really good spot is at a  farm at corner of W.Mitchell rd and Dark Corner Rd. (QF46wp). This might worth stopping and asking if we could use their paddock.

After returning to highway, we passed Mt.Lambie, it was still shrouded in low cloud. We proceeded onto Lithgow, purchasing some dinner and heading up to Hassans Walls lookout to check this as a potential site. Aft this heading up the Chifley Rd, stopped at Dargan next to railway line,  could hear 439.700 repeater from Nelson Bay,   also the Somersby 6m, 2m & 70cm repeaters are all 60/9 signals even though it pouring rain and sitting in cloud. It poured rain all the way back to Sydney.

Note: in this picture, you can see the ridgeline in the background of Old Ilford Rd.

post mortem summary of the WIA Summer VHF/UHF/SHF Field Day Contest 12th/13th January 2019

here is summary of the weekend:

operated  from Mt.Lambie (QF46xm) on Saturday afternoon, 2m SSB, 23cm SSB,  9cm SSB, 6m (52.525) FM, 70cm (439.000) FM.   At last minute we didnt take 6m yagi or multimode.  The 70cm yagi for SSB did not work, later finding a damaged centre pin in connector, and did not take 10 GHz unit as too big to fit it.  It was clear skies, so solar panel & battery adequately provided power, so did not need to run generator. Packed up and left Mt.Lambie at 5pm.

Saturday night at QF46pu, we did some portable microwave contacts with Dave VK2JDS (QF46pu) across to Justin VK2CU's location (QF46qu), worked all 11 x bands 50 Mhz to 76 GHz until midnight.

Sunday morning did not go to QF46xe, instead stayed at QF46pu to operate all bands again, then continued on after lunch  doing contacts for Ross Hull Contest. Also did some driving around looking for possible portable sites, ie. high spots that can be cleared.

Summer VHF/UHF Field Day Contest - 12th / 13th January 2019

almost end of 2018 and just realised that it only two weeks until the 2019 Summer VHF/UHF/SHF Field Day Contest.   I missed the Spring Field Day for 2018, so more effort required to ensure I go portable to operate VHF through SHF, obviously a mountain in the western side of Blue Mtns. The plan is to go Saturday morning setup for 12noon start, do 6 hrs stint will be enough. Not serious to win, it's about just getting out portable to give out some numbers to others and build up microwave skillset. I got everything for 6metres and above, but primary focus is on microwave bands.

John Moyle Field Day 2018

I actually went portable for John Moyle Field Day this year,  held across Saturday 17th March and Sunday 18th March, I operated just for the 6 hour session on the Saturday.
I had just over half a dozen contacts, not that I was not really trying hard, as I was also testing equipment, checking for beacons and trying a couple sites, helping a few people get some contacts, get some fresh mountain air.

I operated from two spots, QF56cm, near Zig Zag Railway at Clarence, I had a look at a few spots around, before settling on one site at approx 1150m ASL, nice clear mountain top, low level scrub, it was actually discovered by some friends Geoff VK2AVR and Dom VK2JNA, who had stopped  by when I was operating at a nearby location for a 23 on 23 Microwave Day last year.

After a couple hours, I was not having much luck with making some contacts to some specific people, so I packed up and moved to Mt Lambie QF46xm, it is about 1350m ASL, from here I could actually make some successful contacts.

I'll get all this documented on my website with more photos and map details soon.
The first pic at QF56cm,  the 2nd pic at QF46xm.

RF site testing at QF46qu on Easter Sunday, 16th April, 2017

Doing some site testing at a friend's farm at QF46qu at Gowan, north west of Bathurst NSW.
my GPS estimated 950m ASL mostly cleared, with almost 360degress of clear horizon, good for playing radio. As it was Sunday morning I made use of the fact that the WIA morning broadcast was one reason to listen for it on various known frequencies including 2metres, 70cm and 6metres.

I could hear 146.775 Newcastle, 146.725 Somersby, 146.850 Maddens Plains, 146.975 Knights Hill,  53.650 Maddens Plains, 146.950 Mt Ginini.   Could not hear anything from Dural. This was using quad band radio (TYT TH-9800) and quad band vertical from the vehicle. Should be much easier with some yagis up a mast.

Looks to be excellent site to run microwave equipment from (23cm and upwards).

a little bit of trees to north east,
looking to north coast & mid north coast NSW, all clear.
looking to Newcastle through Sydney, all clear
Looking back to Bathurst
 Looking to south and VK1
Looking to VK3 & VK5 all clear.
Looking west, a couple trees
Facing to north west, highest point where these pine trees are.
Looking north, a few sparse trees, but nothing Roundup or a chainsaw can't fix
Good flat area, for parking, camping, whatever.

Field Portable QF46pu Gowan NSW

For Easter weekend, April 2017, was visiting QF46pu, to get on 2m,70cm, and 23cm AE nets in the mornings. Did some testing on 23cm gridpacks and dish against the Dural beacon 1296.420. Did not hear any other 23cm beacons.
This is small gridpack looking back towards Newcastle.

This is a larger gridpack, certainly slightly better than the small gridpack
IC-910H was hooked up to 2m yagi, 70cm yagi and 23cm  running from solar panels and batteries
The 3metre diameter mesh dish with 23cm feed, aimed towards north coast NSW
Smaller gridpack aimed at Sydney Dural 23cm beacon (approx 180km)
Looking towards Melbourne in the gap between trees
Looking toward VK1, worked VK1KW and VK1DJA on 2m SSB
 2metre and 70cm yagis

I took 3.4Ghz and 10GHz  but did not get time to flash it up.

Best activity was working Compton VK2HRX who was SOTA portable up the Warrumbungles, worked him on 2m SSB, 70cm SSB and 1294.000 FM

Aiming to the right of the big tree to work Compton VK2HRX/p at QF48mr SOTA spot CCW001 a distance of 209km, not bad on 1294 MHz FM as Compton was using a 1w handheld.
and screenshot from VKLogger

For next time,  remember take my portable generator.

Microwave Activation Day

the next Microwave Activation Day fast approaching, Saturday 23rd July 2016.
Hoping to help our with some 3.4 GHz testing  with Brian VK2XTC and Gary VK2KYP.
I also  wish to take 23cm and see if I can hear anything  from VK4,  ie. MS scatter or AE, as these days yield a good turnout from VK4 area, so expect plenty signals bouncing around from up that way.

GippsTech wrap-up

Enjoyed the lectures at GippsTech this year.  Enjoyed the drive down and back, managed to work a few SOTA stations on 40metres, whilst mobile. Met new people and caught up with old acquaintances. This year was interesting in terms of 3.4 GHz as several attendees brought their completed 3.4 Ghz panels, so we did some carpark tune-ups and then headed in different directions  to make some  contacts on 3398.200 Mhz. Lou VK3ALB, Matt VK3PP, Bernard VK3AV, Mark VK5AVQ, Gary VK2KYP, Dave VK2JDS and myself all had operational panels, plus several others with non completed panels were there to see these panels in operation, which in turn inspired them to get their panels completed. Tim VK5ZT gave a lecture on modifications for these panels so there some new alternative methods for modifying these down to 3.4 GHz and some added features to enhance the panels functionality. Next year we bring  gear to run on other microwave bands to have an even bigger activation.

here is extract off VKlogger showing some of the contacts:

here is Mark VK5AVQ and Dave VK2JDS at "The Ridge" in Morwell (QF31ER) we did some receive signal comparison testing of our panels using the VK3RGI  beacon some 30km away on 3400.434 MHz

Mountain top portable

Here is a photo of the new shed for the top of the mountain, the TH3 yagi is at top, mostly out of view, with 2metre horizontal yagi for 144 MHz weak signal DX. 70cm horizontal array still attach to the old garden shed. [ Grid square QF46 ]

The shed is approximately 3m x 3.5m, includes a bunk bed, desk, chairs, and rack for the radio equipment, battery cabinet at rear, plus 800mAHr solar panel on the roof.

APRS digi to go in soon on 145.175 MHz, maybe 70cm FM voice repeater too.
