WIA AGM Convention and Hamfest 2024 - Bunderberg, Queensland

 Gidday!

I’m David VK4DN from the Bundaberg Amateur Radio Club – We are hosting the WIA Convention and Expo/Hamfest here in Bundaberg on May 4th / 5th in 2024.

It is the biggest event in the calendar year for Amateur Radio in Australia!   Our members are thrilled to be hosting the event and we would like to extend a warm welcome to your club and members to attend the event.

The weekend includes the WIA AGM, several keynote presentations by guest speakers / a Commercial Expo and Hamfest / Field Day. A gala dinner and lots of other activities! We have even managed to secure a contact with the ISS on Saturday evening with a local high school – (The kids will be able to talk with an astronaut on the space station!)

We are also seeking guest speakers for the event with several slots available – If any member of your club would be interested in doing a talk about something they are passionate about (preferably related to Amateur Radio!) ðŸ˜Š

It should be a very interesting weekend and an opportunity for amateurs from all over Australia to gather and network with other people interested in the hobby.

If you could please forward this email to your members, and discuss at the next meeting, it would be much appreciated! ðŸ˜‰

If you guys have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to make contact with me!

Should any of your members like to book a table for the HamFest or give a talk, please ask them to make contact as well.

Kind regards,

David VK4DN
Secretary – Bundaberg Amateur Radio Club

WIA Winter VHF/UHF Contest - 24th-25th June 2023

The Rules are posted at: https://www.wia.org.au/members/contests/vhfuhf/

Since the untimely passing of Mike Subocz VK3AVV in January 2022, developer of the popular VKCL contest logger, who also wrote a log-checker, we've lost the facility to properly prepare results while awaiting probate on his estate.

As everyone is aware, we have been working on catching up with manually preparing results of the 2022 contests and this year’s Summer event, last January.

A number of people have made valiant efforts over recent months to find or to write suitable log-checking software to suit these unique contests that have been developed by the stakeholders over time.

It’s proven to be a herculean task and I am truly grateful to those volunteers who have taken it on. Let them rest for the moment – or so – and I urge you just get out there, enjoy the outdoors, or the indoors at home, and have fun.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not yet up to the task.

Best wishes to all for the contest.

Roger Harrison VK2ZRH

Manager, WIA VHF/UHF Field Days

John Moyle Field Day 2022 - postmortem

I went to QF46pu with the intention of  working VHF and above, however after the first hour  of calling and finding nothing and hearing nothing,  (except for  VK2LE/p on 146.500, but they could not hear me). Dave VK2JDS was tuning around 40metres and found lots of stations calling CQ Contest,  so I started working the contest on 40metres, it was great fun, lots of strong signals, easy to work them. There were some serious stations out there, but also many casual contesters who liked a bit of a chat, which I was very obliging with.

I was not  doing the contest seriously, just give out some numbers.  There seemed like there were many club groups and family groups, one op had his daughters doing the CQ calls while he made the contacts, so I was surprised by the number of young operators, both genders present, some of which had picked up the contest bug and operating very professionally and proficiently, which was great to hear.

Over the 24 hour period I racked up 50 contacts, in between other projects,  while realistically just having a bit of fun in the contest.  I was operating under my other callsign VK2ABP,  running the Icom 756 Pro2 into a 80metre horizontal wire loop, strung out among the trees.

Now that I had fun on a HF contest, I think I need to have a go at the RD Contest in August. I think I leave the VHF and above for the WIA VHF-UHF Field Day Contests.

I planning to head out west for the weekend and Manly Warringah Radio Society (VK2MB) is also planning to operate portable too.

WIA VHF UHF Spring Field Day Contest 2021 post-mortem

Here in Sydney (on 27th/28th Nov) and probably most of east coast, it was solid wind and rain,  so I did not venture out to do the contest.

The next WIA VHF UHF Summer Field Day contest to be held on 15th/16th January 2022, fingers crossed  for better wx and no more lockdowns.
