Upgraded my Linux Mint laptop to 22.2 "Zara"

I finally upgraded my Linux Mint laptop,  I keep reminding myself to do it, but never get around to it. It has been on 21.3 for quite some time, I doing the patches regularly, but stopping to upgrade is another thing. I upgraded in the recommended steps, 21.3 to 22.0, 22.0 to 22.1, then 22.1 to 22.2 "Zara", each step proceeded with its snapshot for safety. All went well, no side effects or issues detected. The Linux Mint 22.2 built on Ubuntu 24.4 LTS. It works great, nice and fast on my old ASUS N550JK laptop.
This is a great time to remind those about to throw away their old laptop or PC because of Windows 10 now being unsupported, (as of 14th October) that you can recycle those old PC's and laptops giving them another lease on  life by installing a flavour of Linux O/S replacing the old Windows 10.
You have nothing to lose,  Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint to name but a few for you to try. I use mine mainly for browsing, WSJTX and Arduino IDE.

Microwave activity 18th October, 2025

my activity is from Buff Point, near Budgewoi on NSW Central Coast, aiming across Lake Budgewoi, it proved the point that can definitely get back into Sydney from here on 23cm FM, so would be easy on SSB and WSPR

Alternative DMR Networks for VK & ZL (Australia & New Zealand)

Apart from the VKDMR Network (DMR-MARC)   and  Brandmeister DMR Network, there are some other alternate DMR based networks, providing servers in Australia and New Zealand, these are :

Digitial Voice DMR Australia (DVAU) Network    https://dmr.dvau.au/

Digital Voice DMR New Zealand  (DVNZ) Network    https://dmr.dvnz.nz/

the DVAU and DVNZ are experimental networks working together.

VKFreeDMR Network Australia    https://www.vkfreedmr.org/

FreeDMR Network New Zealand    https://freedmrnz.dvnz.nz/

The two FreeDMR networks are associated with the FreeDMR network   https://www.freedmr.uk/

They all have their own dashboards so you can see activity, and similar structured talkgroups.

Wagga Amateur Radio Club (WARC) - new 6metre Repeater on-air VK2RBE

Wagga Amateur Radio Club (WARC) - new 6metre Repeater on-air VK2RBE

Just learnt that a new repeater has been commissioned at Mt.Bethungra, near Bethungra, north of Junee,

operating on 53.825  with -1MHz input, no ctcss tone required and it standalone, as of June 2024.

Follow details on the WARC website Repeaters - Wagga Amateur Radio Club

Just thinking about it, I havent done any trips to Young/Cootamundra/Junee/Wagga/Tumut since 2023, hence not tried out this repeater mobile yet.

Since this new 6metre repeater is co-sited with the VK2RBE 2metre repeater on 146.675MHz,  then it is possible it will be accessible from the Hume Highway in the Jugiong-Coolac region for those traversing the Hume Highway with 6metre FM in the mobile, otherwise should be good coverage on the Olympic Highway in Junee-Bethungra-Cootamundra section.

Brandmeister Network Activity Viewer - hose.brandmeister.network

This is a reminder of a Brandmeister tool website to give you a  live snapshot of current/recent activity on the Brandmeister DMR Network. You can you use the dropdown icon on right hand side to allow you to choose the view based on a region or country. In my example I am looking at EU and AU regions, you can select one region or multiple. If you click on the desired talkgroup you can monitor it, which is good tool to test if you transmitting or not. Choose a region and you can select & deselect it.  This website has been updated compared to how it originally looked.  Now it sticking purely to the required data and less graphics, to get more on your screen.

Brandmeister talkgroup 530 ZL National Call

On Brandmeister DMR, one of the talkgroups I monitor is TG530, I keep hearing this strange white hash sound and bits and pieces of conversations and its randomly occurs,  including some drunken americans talking jibberish, I just never bothered to stop and try to figure what it was, I usually turn down the volume until it goes away again.

This time I stopped to pay more attention, took note of the ID  and realised it was only one ID involved 530047, looked it up on the Brandmeister website, it comes up as ZL2AWW, showing two hotspots, then I  monitored the Heard list, its all sorts weird things going on, as if it tied to a gateway and a cluster in USA, strange behaviour for a ZL Call channel.

Its odd, with squeals and artifacts of digital transmissions and bits of one sided QSO's, sometimes maybe hear both sides and one american I recognise on several occassions comes up with some slurred words, god knows what he saying, I guessed he is pissed. Then I  realised it was coming from WW TG91

The two hotspots have different SSID's, and showing different frequencies, so I dont think the hotspots are relaying to each other, but at 600kHz away, and if operated in close proximity to each other they may interfere with each other. So it looks to be bleedthrough from one hotpot 53004721 txing locally, being received by the second hotspot 53004701 and it is broadcasting to TG530

QSL card from Eddie VK1VP

I was going through some old QSL cards and  found one that I that I considered important, from a very memorable person, this from Eddie VK1VP,  one of the people you could always guarantee to be around to give you a reply to a CQ, or some numbers in a contest. For this particular contact, it was when I was portable for probably the Ross Hull Contest at Kanangra Boyd National Park, here in western Blue Mountains from Sydney. Eddie was a great person and much appreciated.

40m VDSL filter for your NBN (FTTN)

Geoff VK2WA  pointed me to a blog posting from Andrew VK3FS

for filtering the VDSL signal hitting 40metre band for NBN FTTN connections.

A 40m VDSL filter to stop Internet drops. Works with TP-link Archer modem

I having the same plus more, not so much noise  eminatiing from the VDSL mode, but my RF crashing my VDSL,

but first, the trick I did to crush the RFI radiating  from my VDSL connection and  my VDSL modem, I just add some clip-on  ferrites cores on the VDSL cable as it popper out of the wall heading to the VDSL modem, I just added the camp over ferrites one at a time, each time checking the internet download and upload speeds, I was getting 55Mbps download, for a 50Mbps NBN service, I hit a point where the dowblaod and upload speeds dropped, then removed that last ferrite, returning to a 555Mbps download and 19Mbps upload> now I could not detect any RFI from my VDSL FTTN service.

Next problem,  crashing the modem, if ran on any HF band,  I only needed 5watts  to reset the modem, from any HF band,  so I started adding ferrites on the cables coming from the modem internally,  winding multiple turns on large size clampon  ferrites yielded good results, now I can safely run 50w on Tx on any HF band.  To improve on that, if I isolate the internal copper pair wiring within the house I can then run the 100watts.

End of 2024, full FTTP arrive in our street, just a matter of switching over to FTTP service to see what happens then.

ARDC interview of Bdale Garbee (KB0G)

I was looking up something on QRZ.COM, amongst the ads on the main page, I spotted a photo, I thought I recognise that person, it was Bdale Garbee, (man of a thousand tiedie T-sheets)  it  was ad for a interview on Youtube. The same man who created Bdale's Messy Mailer,  I would hate to think how many years I used the BM mailer program in NOS.
Bdale was involved in TAPR AX25 and later Linux, (in particular Debian) amongst many other projects.

Some new VHF & Above DX locations

on trip out to Mudgee and return, I looking out for good locations to operate VHF, UHF  and above, two good accessible, clear locations found are :
1. intersection of  Aarons Pass Road, Castlereagh Highway and Perrams Road,  a few kilometres north of Ilford, the two side roads are on the crest of a hill, clear of trees, good place for microwave portable.
2. Cherry Tree Hill, on Castlereagh Highway, place called Running Stream, south of Ilford, north of Capertee, it was sign posted as being 1100m ASL, north of Razorback Road.  That is a significant height, as Mt Canobolis near Orange is 1250m ASL

Mudgee trip 10-14 April, 2025

 APRS coverage on 30metres (10.147600 ) for VK2KFJ-15,
accidentally switched off HF APRS for a section, when going up and back.
30metre coverage works very well day and night, most packets  received via VK2MB-6

APRS coverage via phone for VK2KFJ

APRS coverage via 2metres (145.175 MHz)  for VK2KFJ-9,
we can see coverage on 2metres is lacking  from Lithgow to Gulgong
